A series of films about the Vietnam War will be shown free beginning Tuesday as part of a University of Hawaii conference, “Thirty Years After: Literature and Film of the Vietnam War.”
The films, under the heading “Re-Viewing Vietnam: Film Representation of the Vietnam War” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. through Nov. 10 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Authors and scholars of Vietnam War literature give their presentations Nov. 8 to 10 at the East-West Center and other University of Hawaii locations.
More than 40 panelists will speak on topics ranging from American and Vietnamese literature to Vietnamese Web sites and poetry.
Speakers include Vietnam war veterans Tim O’Brien, Wayne Karlin and Philip Beidler and Vietnamese-American writer Andrew Lum.
O’Brien, who holds the Mitte Chair in Creative Writing at Southwest Texas State University, will deliver the keynote address, 4 p.m. Nov. 8 at the East-West Center.
He is the author of “If I Die in a Combat Zone,” “Going After Cacciato” and six other novels and fiction collections, including the recent “July, July.”
O’Brien also will read from his works at 4 p.m. on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, at the Hale Koa Hotel.
