Colombo: The cause behind the deaths of monkeys that live around the Dambulla ancient rock temple, 125 km north of Colombo is believed to be a viral infection, the veterinary officer of the area Dr. J. M. Senevirathna Banda said to a local newspaper.
Around 150 monkeys have died now. Monkeys lose appetite, become very weak and suffer from diarrhea before death.
A corpse of a monkey has been sent to the Veterinary Research Institute of Kandy, Sri Lanka for further study.
These monkeys are loved by the local and foreign tourists who visit this ancient rock temple which is a famous tourist attraction.
