Many would agree that a healthy dose of optimism is desirable even in the most dire situations. But U.S. Republicans may have gone a step further: They have set aside $20 million for a “commemoration of success” in Iraq and Afghanistan, of all places, Britain’s Independent reports. They are so confident of success in the two conflicts that the “celebration funding” was included in a congressional military spending bill for the past year.
The Independent cites The New York Times, which broke the story, saying the new legislation empowers the president to designate a day of celebration and “issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe that day with appropriate ceremonies and activities”.
News of escalating violence both in Iraq and Afghanistan mean they will probably have to wait to spend this money.
